APRIL 2, 2021 // FOCUS ON A FENCE POST

THE SEA RANCH, CALIFORNIA

A FENCE + WILD FLOWERS ABOVE THE PACIFIC OCEAN IN THE SPRING TIME // Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. EF24-70mm ƒ4L IS USM. ISO 100. 24 mm. 0 ev. ƒ8. 1/160 s

This is a place holder. I am feeling my way through the past to figure out where I was why and how. The fact that I chose, inadvertently, or perhaps not, to focus on the fence post, as opposed to the flowers grabbed my attention as I attempted to fulfill the self imposed obligation of producing this document. Also, nature seems flawless at producing a harmonic color scheme, at least insofar as I experience vision. Thank you. Good bye.

MARCH 10, 2021 // MORNING SUN, LAGUNA BEACH

LAGUNA BEACH, CALIFORNIA

These photographs chronicle taking Ramona for a walk to the beach and back on the morning of March 10, 2021. The clouds appeared to be photogenic and the temperature was agreeable. Jessie looked after the dog so that I was able to practice using the camera.

MARCH 16, 2021 // CHAINSAWS FOR BABY JESUS

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

Being mad at your kid for not having work ethic and values is like cutting down a tree you planted with a chain saw when it reaches maturity and you realize it isn’t Jesus so you’re like fuck you buddy, die for my sins.  Schedule next.

I’m learning to become comfortable with what I am drawn to document. A subject who is cooperative and available is a good one to photograph. Here we have a musician in his garden. The photographer ought not see fit to cut off his feet next time, and also to figure out how to allow for greater light exposure on the interior shot. All in all this is a good effort though and one only gets better by learning from his mistakes.

LIGHT LEAK UNINTENTIONAL TRICK # 3 // ASAHI PENTAX K1000 PENTAX-M 1:2 50mm ASA 400 EXPOSURE 23

These were pictures taken with my father’s film camera from the 1970s, It might be even from the late 1960s. I’ll have to figure that out later. The camera has been sitting in my storage boxes for a long time and I noticed a correlation between this fact, and a feeling of sadness and neglect. So I decided to design a project wherein I’d have a structure to interact with that camera. That project is to load the camera with film and shoot nature subjects, and then to evaluate the results and try to do better on the next roll of film.

This time I believe I failed to rewind the film properly prior to opening the door to get the film out, hence the grainy appearance and light leaks. I’m curious to see how much better the pictures look without that mistake happening. After solving that issue, I’m hoping to use different lenses he has other than the 50 mm one that I used on this one, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of each lens. Also, I’m thinking I’ll use photos from this project for artwork for the next music record I finish.

Finally, I’d like to mention that I’m learning that solving projects with tools carries lessons across mediums. For example: Experimenting with an analog camera is helpful to learning to use and appreciate a digital camera better. Likewise, using a four track to record music helps one to better navigate a faster, more powerful digital recording software. (There was a four track in my storage for a long time as well).
