These were pictures taken with my father’s film camera from the 1970s, It might be even from the late 1960s. I’ll have to figure that out later. The camera has been sitting in my storage boxes for a long time and I noticed a correlation between this fact, and a feeling of sadness and neglect. So I decided to design a project wherein I’d have a structure to interact with that camera. That project is to load the camera with film and shoot nature subjects, and then to evaluate the results and try to do better on the next roll of film.

This time I believe I failed to rewind the film properly prior to opening the door to get the film out, hence the grainy appearance and light leaks. I’m curious to see how much better the pictures look without that mistake happening. After solving that issue, I’m hoping to use different lenses he has other than the 50 mm one that I used on this one, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of each lens. Also, I’m thinking I’ll use photos from this project for artwork for the next music record I finish.

Finally, I’d like to mention that I’m learning that solving projects with tools carries lessons across mediums. For example: Experimenting with an analog camera is helpful to learning to use and appreciate a digital camera better. Likewise, using a four track to record music helps one to better navigate a faster, more powerful digital recording software. (There was a four track in my storage for a long time as well).

The first photograph is of a morning walk, and the other three are of an afternoon walk. For the afternoon one we walked all the way to a beach that is north of the house, near where there is a building that has a sauna and there’s an outdoor pool with a tower sculpture made out of wood. The design of the locker room looks like it could have been done by a Scandinavian sculptor for a modern art museum. The beach is accessed by a narrow path with a rail road tie tiered staircase through the cypress trees.

The tide was very low so there was a part of the beach open that normally is covered in water. Claire and Jessie picked up a large piece of kelp and played tug of war with Ramona. Ravi swung a different piece of kelp around like a comic book character would. I went swimming in the Ocean. There was little wave forming around one of the rock islands, and I was able to body surf several before I heard Ramona barking.

I swam in, and ran back to where she was straining at the leash in an effort to eviscerate a small white dog, and medium sized white person. The person, who had superimposed its attitude upon in its animal, thought both me and Ramona had not met the unwritten credentials for being at this ipso facto exclusive location. The white dog and person were correct. Ramona and I did not meet those credentials. Furthermore, we didn’t care, and weren’t ashamed. There was a man boldly taking my photograph as I ran to intervene. I don’t believe he was affiliated with the party Ramona wanted to murder, but it was the same attitude; that we were exotic, and assumed we’d know our place.

I sprinted past the photographer and reached Ramona. I picked her up in my arms. She squirmed and licked my face. She did not like how freezing cold my body was, but did enjoy the taste of dripping salt water. I put Ramona down and Jessie and I ushered her off the beach. Claire and Ravi followed. There was much discussion as to what caused Ramona’s aggressive behavior on the way home. It really wasn’t a mystery to me though. It’s just gets you in trouble to say out loud. I’ve learned this, and Ramona has not.

This dog is stoic and and consistently alert. I believe her to be a positive influence on my work. I can see my place in the world more clearly since we’ve begun living together. These photographs were taken during a long walk, in the middle of the day, from our home base near Pebble Beach, to Black Point Beach.

We went for a walk early in the morning. The sun rose over the ridge. I attempted to photograph the first rays of direct sun shining on the ocean. When we first set out the air felt cold, but you can’t really tell that by looking at pictures.

We were walking toward Pebble Beach a long Sculpture Point Drive. Ramona spotted two deer grazing in an empty yard. She was very fascinated and possibly wanted to eat them. I took the photograph to illustrate her pronounced forward leaning posture which a lot of people and domestic animals find impolite. It is mainly a good composition but I cut off the paws at the bottom of the frame. I must cease making this undisciplined mistake.
